Workout tip for the week Machines vs free weights A lot of people will tell you that free weights are better, but are they better for you? If you're new to the gym or lifting weights, it may be difficult to figure out where to start, and how to do exercises effectively. Machines are an excellent way to start your fitness journey because they guide your movements and often have instructions and suggestions on them to help you do the exercises. The presence of a machine also helps to remind you not to skip a body part - no chest day everyday! Once you're more comfortable and start to learn how to do exercises, however, free weights should take over because they force you to think about balance, allow for personal variations (which a machine can only do some much) and have infinite variations. Make sure you learn how to do a particular free weight exercise properly - YouTube is great for this, but the key thing is to think about (1) what muscles are you working, (2) what is the movement and (3) is the movement working those muscles? You will be surprised to hear that very often people do the exercise wrong because they do not think about these three things.
