If you're not in the mood for reading, scroll down for my sexy photo from our private beach. How did you guys learn about sex in school? I would like to draw upon the thoughts of my favourite therapist and researcher in the field of sexuality, Leonore Tiefer. She argues that when we learn about sex, we only learn about the natural side of it. Our textbooks are filled with descriptive images of penises and women's sexual organs. We know about the reproductive cycle, how fast sperm can travel, and approximately how many eggs a fertile woman has. But we don't learn about pleasure, the various ways to engage in sexual activities, or the possibilities and varieties. Leonore compares this to when someone starts to play the guitar. They don't learn about the muscles in the hand or the brain centres that function when they play the guitar. They start by learning about rhythms, how to hear and understand the music, how to play easy tones, and how to connect them. We focus on the desirable outcome ā we start learning how to play a musical instrument because we want to play or create music. It's the same with sex. However, opposite to teaching how to play an instrument, with sex, we start with biology and don't even talk about pleasure and various sensations. So, I am curious ā how was your sexual education in school?
